While trying to keep upright on a
heaving deck, this helmsman scans the horizon. It took great skill to keep a
spyglass steady. By the way, landlubbers traditionally used sectional
telescopes--each section is called a drawer--that needed to be extended for use.
Sailors preferred a long and tapering spyglass, which was always ready for
immediate use.
